Six months ago at the Major Gifts event, I had the pleasure (with co-chairs Shiela Berman and Karen Abrams) of presenting the exciting work of the program review committee. Through many hours of dedication from volunteers and staff, we reviewed the then current programming throughout the community, identified gaps and made recommendations for improvement and restructuring.

Definitions:
Conundrum: a paradoxical, insoluble, or difficult problem; a dilemma.

Williamson Turn: (nautical reference) an emergency procedure that very quickly puts a ship back in a location but heading in the opposite direction. Creates short term chaos which leads to positive results.

Okay, so here is where we find ourselves today as a Jewish community in Louisville. Short on cash but long on needs and desires.

To commemorate the one-year anniversary of merger between the Jewish Community Center and the Jewish Community Federation of Louisville, let’s take a moment to reflect on what this has meant for the community.

While one cannot always see daily progress at work, this column has allowed members of the Board of Directors, over the last 12 months, to communicate and report to the community on what is happening behind the scenes. As we learn from the past, live in the present and look towards the future, there are many lessons that can be taken away. It is the hope that this column has been not only informative, but also hopeful in that progress continues to happen each and every day.

It is hard to believe that I have already been in Louisville for over a year and half working for JCL’s Young Adult Division. I distinctly remember my first few weeks here when everything seemed so confusing, and I was busy trying to adjust to the life and culture in Louisville. When I look back, I realize how much the community was able to accomplish in a short time, and how much lies in front of us for the near future.
